The Recipe for a Conscious Home
Food, family, design and ethical living in harmony
Stepping inside Glow Diaries Liz’s light-filled inner-city townhouse feels like a deep breath. Details reflecting her thoughtful way of living- guided by care for her family, her values, and the earth.
As a mother and plant-based foodie, renowned for her famous vegan recipes, Liz brings the same intention to her home as she does to her kitchen, creating spaces that feel warm, balanced and deeply lived in. Her approach is simple yet meaningful: a celebration of beauty, functionality and the quiet joy found in everyday moments.
Has becoming a mother changed the way you approach your home or kitchen?
“You have so much less time, yet so much more to do.”
Becoming a mum has made me more resourceful and effective. You also have a new little person who will always take priority over everything and everybody else in your life - I like the clarity and perspective that gives me.
When it comes to food, it’s forced me to create recipes that are mostly quick and easy (but still taste great, of course). I still enjoy making a more involved recipe from time to time, but it’s rare. I try to keep things simple, mostly nutritious, and easy to clean up. My kitchen gets messy very quickly, but I follow a general order with pantry organisation so I don’t have to “reset” it too often.
I view my home as a sanctuary now - not just for me, but for my son. I’ve always wanted a beautiful home, but now it must be practical first and serve our ever-changing needs. I love beautiful things, but I refuse to be a slave to them! If they require a lot of maintenance or delicate handling, I just know it’s not going to work ha.
When you’re hosting friends or family, how do you like to set the mood at home?
“Big lights off, lamps on, and music for the vibe.”
Music, lighting and comfortable seating are my top three! The right atmosphere is everything - warm light, relaxed tunes, and enough space for everyone to unwind.
Do you think food and interiors are connected in the way they bring people together?
“They’re totally intertwined.”
Absolutely. You always serve food to match the setting you’re in - nibbles on the couch, a formal dinner at the table, handheld bites at a party.
Kitchens, especially, can invite guests to be part of the cooking process with the right layout. Some designs include stovetops on island counters, which I’d love to incorporate when we eventually renovate. They let you cook and talk at the same time, getting your guests involved in the process. It becomes a shared experience - much more bonding than sticking to roles of ‘host’ and ‘guest.’

What does “slow living” look like for you in everyday life?
“Enjoying your life, not rushing through it like a to-do list.”
For me, slow living means being present in your body and environment while still getting on with what needs to be done. It’s about enjoying your life instead of racing through it - something I’m always working on, as it’s easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of everyday life.
Do you have a go-to recipe for cosy nights in, when home feels like the heart of everything?
My Thai Peanut Curry is like a creamy hug in a bowl - the perfect dinner to curl up with on the couch on a cold night.
Are there any local brands, artisans, or makers you love to support?
I love spending time at Ceres with my son. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a sustainable urban farm, café and market built on an old tip site in Brunswick, Victoria. It’s a short bike ride from our house and feels like a second home.
They offer classes and community events - from makers markets to sustainable living workshops. We go there to play, eat and take music classes.
Which are your favourite Rugs for Good pieces, and what do you love most about them?
“They’re plant-based, yet so heavy, luxurious and soft.”
My favourite pieces are the Gaia Loop Weave Jute Rug, Runner, and Doormat. The golden honey colour of the jute is stunning - they feel so comforting and plush underfoot. The large rug has totally transformed our open living space by creating a ‘zone’ that separates the couch from the dining table.
The Ananda Two-Toned Round Rug is perfect for my home office nook - the contrasting colours are beautiful.
The Dharma Jute Doormat in Indigo is durable, stops dirt from being tramped through the house, and I love the rich indigo tone.
