The Style Edit: Al + Imo's Tips for Choosing and Styling Rugs

Looking for expert advice on choosing and styling the perfect rug for your space?

We’re excited to kick off this chapter of The Style Edit, a series where we chat with creatives, interior designers and stylists about their homes, interior inspiration, and rug styling secrets.

We're getting the conversation rolling with our first guest, Al + Imo!

This husband and wife duo are renowned for their craftsmanship, dreamy home renovations and creating handmade furniture from locally sourced Australian hardwoods.

Join Imo as she share's her story and insights with you for choosing and styling rugs:

Bold or neutral tones?

Depends on the space! We chose the beautiful Mendocino in Olive for our living room which some may say is a bold choice ... but it doesn't feel too overwhelming with the other colours in our home. Whereas we have a natural jute rug in our girl's colourful bedrooms, the Ananda.

Minimal design or texture and patterns?

I love minimal but with a bit of texture. My favourite combo is jute and wool because it's natural and soft underfoot.

In our bedroom we have the Alskar Wool and Jute Rug which has lovely texture.

What do you look for when searching for the perfect rug?

Firstly it needs to be child and dog friendly, secondly I want a rug that is soft and comfortable to walk on and lastly it needs to be the right size & colour.

Any tips for matching a rug with an existing space?

If you're going for colour pick a colour that also appears somewhere in your space, for example we have a beautiful olive clock on our wall and our home is surrounded by eucalyptus trees... which means the Mendocino rug is a perfect match.

How do you determine what size rug you need?

Once the furniture is placed in the room, I measure the space to make sure that the rug is big enough to fill the room with all of the furniture touching so that it feels grounded and creates a zone.

We hope you’ve loved the insights from this talented duo! Their home is truly breathtaking, and we’re so proud to see our rugs featured in so many iconic spaces around their home.
