Tucked into the lush, rolling hills of the Byron Bay Hinterlands, Billi-Hunter Drury has created a soulful retreat that feels both grounded and deeply personal.
As a creative, mum of two, and co-founder of Studio Haus Co.
Billi brings an intuitive eye to design—one rooted in calm, lived-in spaces that honour their surroundings. Her home and accommodation, Hunter Cabin, sit on a character-filled property in Booyong, where old fig trees and timeworn textures tell stories of the past. With a thoughtful, layered aesthetic and a connection to nature at every turn, this is a space that invites you to slow down, exhale, and stay a while.

“It had so much soul—old fig trees, established gardens, and a cottage full of history. It felt like the kind of place you could really put roots down.”

Can you tell us about your background and what led you to settle in the Byron Bay Hinterlands?
My name is Billi-Hunter Drury and I’m a creative, mum of two, and co-founder of Studio Haus Co. My background is in interior architecture, and I’ve always been drawn to spaces that feel calm and lived-in. We found our property in Booyong back in 2018. It had so much soul—old fig trees, established gardens, and a cottage full of history. It felt like the kind of place you could really put roots down. We’ve been slowly restoring it ever since, trying to work with what was already there rather than starting from scratch.
You can follow along over at @huntercabin for our accommodation or @billi.hunter for my artwork. Hunter Cabin is available to book directly via www.huntercabin.com.au.
Can you tell us a little about Hunter Cabin and what made you want to share your slice of paradise with the world?
Hunter Cabin started as a rundown brick structure on the property. We restored it ourselves with the idea of creating a quiet little escape, a place to slow down and reset. It’s now a one-bedroom cabin tucked into the garden, with outdoor baths, a firepit, and just enough space to properly exhale. Sharing it felt like the natural next step.
"We wanted others to experience the stillness and beauty we’ve found here."
Can you tell us about what inspired the layered, textural, tonal design, the materials and finishes you chose to achieve the aesthetic and any unique features or personal touches that make Hunter Cabin so special?
The design came together pretty intuitively,
I wanted it to feel grounded and warm, like it had always been there.
We kept the palette earthy and neutral, with lots of texture through the limewashed walls, linen, and reclaimed timbers. Most of the pieces inside are vintage or handmade. There’s a real focus on tone and balance, so nothing feels jarring. The whole project was a team effort, my dad and brother handled the construction, Cal and I focused on the details, landscaping and furnishing, and my sister helped bring the final look to life through her styling.

What can you tell us about your art and how art can enhance a space?
“I started painting because I wanted to create beautiful pieces that felt at home in the spaces I was designing.”
My work leans into realism and is often inspired by calm, quiet moments, a figure on horseback, a worn-in pair of boots. I’m always drawn to earthy tones and simple compositions that sit well in a room without taking over.

What role does the surrounding landscape play in your daily life, and how have you designed Hunter Cabin to make the most of it?
The landscape is everything. The cabin is surrounded by big old trees, open sky, and the sound of nature, we wanted to bring as much of that in as we could. That’s why we added two outdoor baths and the big wraparound balcony. Whether you’re sitting by the firepit, having a morning coffee, or just soaking in the tub, the space invites you to slow down and take it all in.
“A room doesn’t need to be full, but it does need warmth. And don’t be afraid to leave a bit of breathing space—that’s where the magic happens.”
What are your top tips for a well-styled home?
Start with the layout, get the flow right first, then layer slowly. Choose things that make you feel something, not just what’s trending. Texture is everything. A room doesn’t need to be full, but it does need warmth. And don’t be afraid to leave a bit of breathing space, that’s where the magic happens.
What do you look for when searching for the perfect rug?
I always look for something that grounds the space and adds texture. I love natural fibres, earthy tones, and anything that wears beautifully over time. A good rug is the kind of piece that makes the whole room feel more intentional.

Do you have a favourite Rugs for Good rug, what do you love most about it?
I love the Bhakti rug in Oyster. It’s soft and subtle but still adds so much depth. The tone works with everything, and it has that relaxed, lived-in feel I’m always chasing.
