The Style Edit | Tegan Constable

Rooted in warmth, nature and family life, this South Coast home is a reflection of its owner’s calm and considered approach to design. We sat down with Teagan, a graphic designer by trade at Design About and a mum to two with another little one on the way, to talk about her thoughtful approach to creating spaces that feel grounding, intentional and deeply lived-in. Inspired by the surrounding beach, bush and creek land, her home blends earthy palettes, natural materials and layered textures to form a true family sanctuary.
Where great design isn’t about perfection, but about creating a place where children can play freely, family can gather with ease, and everyday moments unfold slowly, surrounded by warmth and connection to nature.

Tell us a little about yourself, your process and what great design means to you?

I’m a mum of two with another little one on the way, living on the beautiful South Coast of NSW. I’m a graphic designer by trade and have always been drawn to all things design. For me, great design is about creating spaces that feel calm, intentional and full of warmth - places where my family can grow, rest and feel at home.

What does ‘home’ mean to you beyond just a place to live?

Home is safety, sanctuary and the sound of my kids’ laughter. It’s personal touches, memories and a feeling of calm. I was quite sick when I was younger and spent a lot of time at home, so creating a space that feels soothing, comfortable and connected to nature has always been important to me.

How does living on the South Coast shape your style and the way you create your home?

We’re lucky to have the beach nearby and a creek and bush setting behind our home. That combination of coast and bush inspires everything - the natural colours, the textures, the light. I love bringing the outdoors in through earthy tones and materials that reflect what’s happening outside our windows.

How do you approach curating pieces & what guides your decisions?

I’m drawn to natural textures - wool, jute, wood, travertine, rattan, linen, stone and clay. I love an earthy palette, comfortable spaces and a blend of old and new. Anything that feels grounded, warm and connected to nature always finds a place in our home.

What qualities do you look for in furniture, textiles or décor?

Quality and longevity are important. I choose pieces with natural textures, earthy tones and ethical craftsmanship. I love items that age well, tell a story and sit comfortably alongside vintage finds.

Does your home encourage a slower, more intentional way of living?

Absolutely. We love family dinners, nights around the fire, playing games, painting and creating together. We spend a lot of time outdoors - picnics, gardening and cooking meals from scratch. Inside, calm spaces encourage play, reading and connection. Our kitchen is a space designed for all of us to cook and be together.

What role does motherhood play in shaping the way you design and use your spaces?

Motherhood influences everything. I want the kids to feel comfortable and able to play in every room. We keep baskets of toys and books in all our living spaces, display my daughter’s artwork, and create corners for cuddles, reading and exploring. Our home is designed for family life - warm, inviting and lived-in.

What’s your favourite corner of your home, and why?

Our back family living/kitchen space - it’s the heart of our home. It’s where we cook, gather, play and spend most of our time together.

Any local brands, artisans or makers you love to support?

We love supporting local creatives. Some favourites in our home are pieces from Rekindle Furniture and ceramics from Nioka Clay. And of course our beautiful rugs for good hand crafted pieces are always favourites in our home.

Do you have a favourite Rugs For Good piece, and what do you love most about it?

Our Dharana Jute Round Rug has been so practical for our high-traffic office space - it adds texture and wears beautifully. We also love the Elk Wool Rug in Umber for our living and play area. It brings warmth, softness and a beautiful natural texture to the room.
